Bound to Reduce – Reuse - Recycle includes a found object and conceptually depicts part of a cell as it attracts a foreign object for recycling and reuse. The found object of rusting steel is a contrasting medium that represents degradation, thus helping cleanse the environment. All organisms have devices for binding nutrients, antigens, or transduction signals (ligands) and some clear the environment of heavy metals, oils and toxins. Today, we are using special microorganisms to help clear the environment of heavy metals, oils and toxins. Hopefully, my sculpture helps us think about these issues and how we may address them. The term “Bound” has two interpretations here: one is our determination to make a difference and the second is the actual binding of the rusting metal to the cell that will make a new use for it.
